THE OAK TREE CENTRE- GARDEN AND PLAY AREA PROJECT

2007 saw the completion of this project, which has made a real difference to Brandhall’s local environment – especially the grassy bank next to The Oak Tree Centre, and the top corner of the old car park.

The major funding (£48,000) for the project came from WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental) under the Landfill Communities Fund. Oldbury Town Team provided further funding, and also many of you who sponsored trees and shrubs.

THE GARDEN

The new garden is reached through the gate at the top of the car park on Tame Road. One condition of the funding is that the garden is accessible to the public, so

we hope local people will enjoy visiting the garden and sitting out in the fine weather.

The contractors finished on site in February, having battled on through the mud.

Our part was then to do the planting.

Early March- The plants arrive!

We are grateful to members of the after schools club for helping with planting . (See oak tree!)

A few weeks later we ordered 5 cubic meters of recycled compost as a mulch. Moving this in a day was a real challenge!

Over the summer the planting flourished, to make it a peaceful haven on the Brandhall Estate.

Our thanks to Peter Brown of SASpence Architects, Alan Smith of ALS Landscape Architecture, HFN Landscapes, Bernhard’s Plants, and especially to all our volunteers. Without your helps this project would not have been possible.

THE PLAY AREA

Outdoor play is very beneficial for young children. The new play area has provided much needed extra splay space for toddlers and

The blue rubber safety surface is safe for toddlers and play equipment. The ‘magic toadstool’ seats are made from recycled tyres.

Planters give an opportunity for budding gardeners to develop skills.

The play hut is designed for storage, as well as for a safe place for children to play.

We hope our children will enjoy many hours of safe play.
